It allows the carrier to sit correctly on the light source while masking extraneous light. This plate is also part of the two-stage adapter system used with the Pro Mount MK2. If you are upgrading from the original Pro Film Carrier 35 to the MK2 version and already own a Pro Mount MK2, this is the only additional part required to maintain compatibility within your setup.
